Riaan is a lover of mixed martial arts. He started practicing at age 9, with Taekwondo, but picked up the interest again when he was 18 years old. He has studied, boxing, Brazilian Jujitsu, and Muay Thai (Thai-style kickboxing). He saw how all these different martial arts followed a very similar basic principle and started applying his style and preferences to a medley of different martial arts. He likes to explore different styles like Karate, Jeet Kune Do, and wrestling to see the differences of how we can use our bodies to defend ourselves.
He is most proficient in Thai boxing and Brazilian Jujitsu and has a special interest in teaching women and girls strategies to escape attacks. He teaches the basics of controlling someone’s wrist; how to break away from someone grabbing an arm and pulling, how to escape situations where someone is attacking from the top, exploring different options to defend against someone laying between legs, and basic use of momentum and leverage.
Possibly the only thing he enjoys more than learning martial arts is teaching it. He believes in using martial arts as a means of self-defense, especially as it applies to colonized people who are under constant attack from the State. He wants to teach as many people as possible what he knows so that we can instill a culture of self-defense in our communities.
